In 1911, under Sun Yat Sen a popular movement had overthrown the long established monarchy and a Republic was set up. The Vietnamese students were inspired by this development and formed the Association for the Restoration of Vietnam (Viet-Nam Quan Phuc Hoi). In this way, developments in China inspired Vietnamese nationalists to set up a democratic republic.
