1. When acetylene is treated with water containing mercuric sulphate, acetaldehyde is produced.
2. Acetaldehyde on oxidation gives acetic acid, CH3COOH. Divide the acid into 2 parts.
3. Neutralise one part of CH3COOH with lime, CaO, to get calcium acetate, Ca(CH3COO)2.
4. Calcium acetate on dry distillation gives acetone, CH3COCH3, which on reduction gives isopropyl alcohol, CH3CHOHCH3.
5. When the other part of acetic acid is refluxed with isopropyl alcohol in presence of H2SO4, the ester isopropyl acetate will be formed.
