How will the reaction of dilutes hydrochloric acid to distinguish between sodium carbonate and sodium sulphite

Answer:

When hydrochloric acid reacts with sodium carbonate it produces sodium chloride and carbon dioxide with brisk effervescence.

Na2CO3 +2HCl →2NaCl + H2O + CO2

But when hydrochloric acid reacts with sodium sulphite, it forms sodium chloride and sulphur dioxide which gives smell of burning sulphur.

Na2SO3 + 2HCl → 2NaCl + H2O + SO2
