Steps to convert Methanol to propanol

  • The conversion of methanol to propanol occurs through the following three steps:

1. Oxidation:

  • Methanol is passed over the heated copper. Due to this, oxidation occurs through which 2 atoms of hydrogen from methanol gets eliminated.
  • This leads to the formation of Methanal.

2. Reaction with Grignard reagent:

  • As methanal is an aldehyde it reacts with Grignard reagent and yields adduct through nucleophilic attack of Grignard reagent to the carbonyl group.

3. Hydrolysis of the adduct

  • The hydrolysis of adduct with water leads to the formation of propanol.
  • The chemical equation involved in the reaction is given in the attachment.
