The electronic configuration of Potassium is 2,8,8,1. Since there is 1 electron in the valence shell, the valency of Potassium is 1.
Similarly, the electronic configuration of Nitrogen is 2,5. Since there is 5 electrons in the valence shell, it cannot lose all the 5. So, it gains 3 electrons to attain octet. Hence, the valency of Nitrogen is 3.
