When resistors are connected in series the resultant resistance is R1 + R2+ R3 +.....
The resultant of a series connection is greater than each individual resistance provided by the resistor.
But if they are connected in parallel the resultant resistance is 1/R1 + 1/R2 +1/R3 +.....
The resultant of parallel connection is less than each individual connection.
So to increase the resultant or equivalent resistance the resistors must be connected in series.
