+ Place a magnetic compass near the north pole of the bar magnet and note down the positions of the two ends of the needle.
+ Move the compass to a new position such that its south pole occupies the position previously occupied by its north pole, and mark the position of the ends of the needle.
+ Repeat this step until you reach the south pole of the bar magnet.
+ Join the points. This gives magnetic field lines. Strength depends on the closeness of the field lines. The tangent at any point to the line gives us the direction of the magnetic field at that point.
