Suppose you have money to invest. You could deposit it in a bank, or with an investment company - they would be financial intermediaries between you and the financial markets.
Or, you could go right to the financial markets yourself, with lots of buyers and sellers, and buy bonds or stocks yourself.
If a stockbroker merely performs a transaction that you direct (buying or selling in a market), that doesn’t count as an intermediary in the sense you’re looking for.
An intermediary takes money from people who want to invest, and it decides where to invest it.
