We can distinguish para hydroxy benzaldehyde and salicylaldehyde through IR spectra on the basis of hydrogen bonding.

Explanation:

  • In salicylaldehyde, due to the presence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding, the bands on O-H and C-O bands are shifted to a lower wavelength
  • Due to intramolecular hydrogen bonding change in concentration at different positions takes place.
  • In the case of para hydroxy benzaldehyde, the bands of O-H and C-O take place at lower wavelengths.
  • It is due to the inter molecular hydrogen bonding.
