In a light, oscillations occur randomly perpendicular to the motion of wave.  A polarized light has oscillations in only direction. A Polaroid polarizes the light. A Polaroid absorbs vibrations in all directions except for one single plane. A Polaroid when used to analyze a polarized light is known as an Analyzer. The analyzer is moved, the intensity of the polarized light varies as per law of Malus.

I=I_ocos^2\phi

Where, \phi is the angle between the Polaroid and analyzer. Maximum intensity is when \phi =0, and minimum intensity is when \phi =90°.
