How will you explain "An angel in disguise " to be a real story?

It is not a sad story instead it is a story which has both sad and happy feelings in it. At first we come to see how her mother died in front of her and the very next moment everybody show their concern. Then Mr Thompson takes Maggie to his house instead of the poor house and his wife who happens to be childless has now something to care and love for . So it is not a Sad story rather everybody is happy.
