Answer:

A chlorine atom can accept 1 more electron to achieve configuration of 8 valence electrons. The valency of chlorine is 1. (ii) Valency of sulphur: The atomic number of sulphur is 16. The sulphur atom has 16 protons and 16 electrons.

➣ Sulphur -

Valency of sulphur is 2

Electronic configuration - (2, 8, 6)

Since its valence shell has 6 electrons, it is easier to gain two electrons rather than losing 6.

➣ Chlorine -

Valency of chlorine is 1

Electronic configuration - (2, 8, 7)

Since its valence shell has 7 electrons, it is easier to gain 1 electron rather than losing 7.

Hope it helps..♪
