Valency of Sulphur: The electronic configuration of Sulphur=2, 8,6. Since, Sulphur has 6 (more than 4) electrons in its outermost shell. =2. Now, Valency of magnesium: The electronic configuration of Magnesium =2, 8, 2.

Explanation:

First write their electronic configurations,

Cl - 2,8,7

S- 2,8,6

Mg - 2,8,2

As we know,

If the last shell has more than 4 electrons, then subtract the number of electrons from 8 to find valency.

So,Cl will have 8-7 = 1 valency and S will have 8-6 = 2.

And for elements, which have less than 4 electrons,

their valency will be the same as the electrons.

Therefore, Mg will have a valency of 2.
