Heating of washing soda into soda ash is decomposition type of reaction which can be justified as follows:
- In decomposition reactions, the reactant breaks down into simpler compounds.
- For instance, when washing soda (i.e. sodium carbonate decahydrate) is heated very strongly, it loses water of crystallization to give rise to soda ash ( i.e. anhydrous sodium carbonate)
- The underlying reaction is as follows:-
Na₂CO₃.10H₂O → Na₂CO₃.H₂O → Na₂CO₃
