How will you magnetise an iron piece and test that it is magnetised?

As much as I know you can't magnatise iron but it can be converted into a electromagnet . You will need to coil an insulated copper wire along the iron piece and then apply potential difference in the wire by connecting the both ends of wire with an electric cell.
To check if it is magnetised or not , you can try attracting iron fillings towards it.

Rub the iron piece on a magnet for several times the iron piece will be magnetised. The magnetised iron attract the iron pins will show it is having magnetic character.
