  • Use sodium hydroxide's molar mass to determine how many grams would contain this many moles. If you add 0.64 g of solid sodium hydroxide to the stock solution you'll get a 0.2-M solution of (approximately) the same volume.

Given:

1M NaOH solution.

To find:

Prepare 0.2M NaOH solution.

Solution:

The chemical formula of sodium hydroxide is NaOH.

The atomic mass of Na is 23 grams.

The atomic mass of oxygen is 16 and H is 1 gram.

The molar mass of NaOH is 40 grams/mol.

Now to prepare a 1M NaOH solution we need 40 grams of NaOH.

Thus to prepare a 0.2M NaOH solution we need 40×0.2=8 grams of NaOH.

Thus 8 grams of NaOH should dissolve in 1000mL water to form a 0.2M NaOH solution.
