Explanation:

For the preparation of Grignard reagent, the apparatus and reagents must be perfectly dry. A Grignard reagent is prepared from 24.5 grams of magnesium turnings, a crystal of iodine, 107 ml (or 137 grams) of n-butyl bromide and 450 ml of anhydrous ether. With rapid stirring, and cooling with ice if necessary, a mixture of 73.5 ml (or 58 grams) of anhydrous acetone and 75 ml of anhydrous ether are added. After all the acetone has been added the reaction mixture is kept overnight. The intermediate product is decomposed by pouring in 500 grams of crushed ice. The precipitated magnesium compounds are dissolved by treating with 10% hydrochloric acid or of 15% sulfuric acid. The obtained solution is transferred to a separatory funnel, the ether layer is removed, the aqueous solution is extracted with ether. The combined ethereal solutions are dried over anhydrous potassium carbonate or anhydrous calcium sulfate, filtered, the ether is removed by evaporation. Finally, the residue is fractionated, the fraction boiling at 137-141° C is collected yielding 105 grams of pure 2-methyl-2-hexanol.
