In the electrolytic refining of copper, the impure metal is made the anode and a thin strip of pure metal is made the cathode, a solution of the metal salt is used as an electrolyte. on passing the current through theelectrolyte, the pure metal from the anode dissolves into the electrolyte.

Copper is refined by the process of electrolysis in which there is a cathode, anode and an electrolytic solution.

The impurities move from one node to the other and thus we obtain copper which is 99.99 % pure.

This level of purity is necessary when using copper for making of conducting wires.
