☃️ Water and kerosene are two immiscible liquids, so we can separate them on the basis of their density. For this, we can use Separating funnel.
Using a Separating funnel:
Due to difference in the densities of two immiscible liquids, the separation of the liquids occurs by using a Separating funnel. So, Let's see the experiment⚡:
AIM :
- We have to separate two immiscible liquids.
MATERIALS REQUIRED:
- Lighter liquid(Kerosene), Water, Beaker, Stand and a separating funnel.
HOW TO DO?
- First of all, we will make a mixture of kerosene and water and pour it in separating funnel.
- Then, let it stand for some hours undisturbed.
- Then, after we see that they are separated, we will open the stopcock.
- Then, let it pour all the water in a beaker.
- Then, we will close and stop until all the water gets separated into another beaker.
WHAT WE WILL OBSERVE?
- We will see that kerosene and water forms two layers because of their insolubility. Kerosene is lighter and less denser than water, so it forms the upper layer.
- After opening the stopcock, the water comes drop by drop into another beaker and got separated.
- The kerosene is left behind, which can be collected in another container.
WHAT WE CONCLUDE?
- As they are immiscible and forming two different layers due to different densities, we can separate them using Separating funnel

Their are several uses of this method, when we need to separate two immiscible liquids. So, Let's see its applications and uses:
- It is used in Separating water and any oil made liquid like petrol, diesel, kerosene etc.
- It is used in Iron ore extraction. The lighter slag is removed from the top by this method leaving behind heavier molten ore at the bottom.
