Synthesis of Dacron
- In the laboratory Dacron is prepared by polycondensation reaction in which terephthalic acid is heated up with ethylene glycol at 425 – 475 K.
- A mixture of zinc acetate and antimony trioxide is used as catalyst.
- Polycondensation is a chemical condensation reaction which results in the formation of a compound with high molecular weight.
- Successive bonds between the monomers results in the formation of polymer.
- Dacron is the condensation polymer.
- Dacron is also known as Terylene.
- It doesn’t absorb water and it is the strongest polymer.
- It is used to make clothing and water bottles. It is mixed with natural fibres like cotton and wool for making various clothes.
