The gas which is released when HCl (Hydrochloric Acid) reacts with a metal is Hydrogen gas (H₂).

HCl + M --------> MCl + ¹/₂ H₂

Now, Hydorgen gas by nature is a very good supporter of Combustion. Hence when a burning splinter, or a lighter is brought near it, there is a characteristic POP sound, indicating that the released gas in H₂.

Hope it helps!!
