Fire is an exothermic reaction, called combustion, which is composed of four parts typically referred to as the Fire Tetrahedron.  This is advanced from the former description of the Fire Triangle, which consisted of heat, fuel and oxygen.  The fourth part is a sustaned chemical reaction, which was changed as the triangle describes better what is needed to begin combustion, but the fourth allows for combustion to continue.
All methods of putting out a fire revolve around removing at least one of those parts to cease the combustion reaction.  A woolen blanket will smother the fire, removing the oxygen needed for complete combustion.  This is similar to a backdraft, which occurs when a fire burns out all the oxygen in a given space, but still has the required heat and fuel for combustion.  This image of a backdraft exploding comes from the rapid on rush of fire once oxygen is reintroduced into that space.
