Cats lick their fur to maintain their normal body temperature. The saliva on their fur evaporates and later this causes a cooling effect, which helps them in maintaining their body temperature.

Cats lick their fur to maintain a cool body temperature. When they lick themselves, the saliva  comes on their body. The saliva then evaporates and the cats body is cool.
