it was stated in the beginning of the poem that Island who is angry because his daughter ran away with the chief and he has sent his men behind them to catch them and punish the chief however when he sees that his daughter entering the sea at a Stormy weather and trying to escape he realises that he could lose his daughter forever and so he things that it is better to compromise and accept the chief instead of giving for his daughter all his life as given in the last stanza of the poem that the that his wreth changed to wailing as he loved his daughter a lot so I believe that Lord uilllin was a good father
