"RISE OF NAPOLEONS":-

After France became a republic in 1792 the period of 'Reign of Terror' (from 1793-1794) started under Robespierre. He followed a policy of severe control and punishment.Due to this he was convicted by court in July 1794 and was arrested. This led to the establishment of a new Constitution by middle classes. It provided for two elected Legislative councils.

These then appointed a directory which is an executive made up of 5 members. However, the directors often clashed with the Legislative Councils, who then sought to dismiss them. The political instability of directory gave rise to military dictator Napoleon.
