How would you separate : salt from water?, chalk powder from water?

We can separate salt and water by performing distillation.
While we can separate chalk and water by leaving the solution for some time to settle the chalk at the bottom and then passing the solution gently through filter paper such that the particles of chalk is left with the filter paper......
