how would you show that pure water does not conduct electricity ?

Pure water can't conduct electricity because it does not contain ions. Because of diluting pure water with acid or a base or a salt, because they produce ions due to the dilution. Pure water does not conduct electricity.Only water can conduct electricity because it has some minerals present in it.

Pure water cannot conduct electricity;

Let me tell you something:

=> Metals like copper and aluminium conduct electricity due to flow of electrons.

=> Electrolytes (solutions) conduct electricity due to flow of mobile ions.


In pure water, there is no mobile ions present, so it does not conduct electricity. This is proved, when you take some distilled water in a crucible and pass current through it. Nothing is observed. If you place a Galvanometer just next to the cell, there will be no deflection in it.


When you add dilute acids or ionic salts in water, free mobile ions are formed, which are ready to discharge at the electrodes. Thus, these ions migrate towards the electrodes to get discharged, hence conducting electricity. In this case, if you place a Galvanometer just next to the cell, it will show deflection. Or, if you connect a bulb with the circuit, it glows brightly, showing that current is flowing.


Note: Tap water conducts electricity even if you do not mix acid or salt with it. This is because it contains some impurities and minerals, which conduct electricity.
