Physicists used to believe that icebecame slippery when it was exposed to applied pressure. ... They believed that when a person went ice skating, the pressure from the blade caused the topmost layer of ice to melt. The thin layer of water allowed the iceskate to glide easily over the surface

HELLO THERE!

Why is ice slippery?

Because ice is less dense than liquid water, its melting point is lowered under high pressures. This is the reason why ice is slippery: When you step on it, the pressure of your weight exerted at the surface of it causes the top layer to melt into water.

Hence, the coefficient of friction is reduced to a greater extent, due to which the frictional force by the ice to oppose your motion decreases.

f = μR (where f = Frictional force, μ = Coefficient of friction, and R = Normal Reaction Force due to ground).

When there is a reduction in μ, there is a reduction in f (frictional force). Thus, the surface of ice does not provide enough friction so that you have easiness in walking. Hence you feel the surface slippery.

It is advised to take short steps on slippery surface so that the force exerted by your feet in each step becomes large, and hence the reaction force by the ground, which will help you in walking.
