We can prove that sound needs a medium to propagate.
Take a glass Bell jar and place an electric bell inside it.
Connect the wires of the electric bell to the battery and also connect a switch between them. Close the Bell jar with an air tight cork .
When the switch is pressed a gong sound produced.
Now remove the air with vacuum pump and press the switch and notice.
The sound of electric bell can not be heard, though the switch is on and bell jar is being striked.
So, sound needs a medium to propagate.

Answer:

Bell-jar experiment demonstrates that sound needs a medium for its propagation. Take an electric bell and an air tight glass bell jar connected to a vacuum pump. Suspend the bell inside the jar, and press the switch of the bell. You will be able to hear the bell ring.
