HGP or Human Genome Project was the mega project of human history. Attempts to code human genome was the main objective of HGP. It has the greatest scientists, lots of computer data and manual efforts were involved in HGP. It was started in 1990 and it was completed in the year 2003. HGP was closely associated with the rapid development of a new area in biology called bioinformatics. Some of the main goals of HGP are:
(i) Identify all the approximately 20,000 to 25,000 genes in human DNA.
(ii) Determine the sequences of 3 billion chemical base pairs that make up human DNA.
(iii) Store the information in data bases
(iv) Improve tools for data analysis.
(v) Transfer related technologies to other sectors such as industries.
(vi) Address the ethical, legal, social issues that may arise from the project.
Hope it helps you
