Washington Irving says, "History is but a kind of Newgate calendar, a register of the crimes and miseries that man has inflicted on his fellow-man." I wholeheartedly agree that human history is a race between education and catastrophe. Human history is replete with accounts of wars, pitiful tales of revolutions, blood-curdling records of atrocities committed by one race against another race, discrimination on the basis of colour and creed, economic exploitation of less developed countries by more developed countries, crusades, heinous war crimes, ethnic cleansing, despicable acts of terrorist activities, large scale annihilation of people through use of atomic bombs, etc, followed by man's enlightenment through painful repentance and suffering. After every large scale catastrophe involving the death of thousands of people and unprecedented destruction, man has tried to find the solution to the life problem through education. All these gory and destructive wars, revolutions, uprisings, etc could have been avoided, if man had tried to find peaceful solutions to issues and problems in the first place. In the past, catastrophe has always taken lead in its race against education which has led to large scale losses of human life and resources. Undoubtedly education has taken a considerable lead in this race now, but the danger of catastrophe always lurks alarmingly. If mankind has to continue living prosperously, it must ensure its total dependence on education. All the existing national and global challenges must be resolved through education. Another catastrophe will surely annihilate the mankind from the face of this planet!
