Answer:
Yes. Of course. Everywhere.
Humans are capable of great evil, and they are capable, too, of astounding good.
This may seem silly, but one of my favorite quotes ever about the struggle between good and evil came at the end of the TV show True Detective. Looking up at the sky, one character remarks that all of life is a struggle between light and dark.
The other detective says: “I hate to tell you, buddy, but it looks like dark is winning.”
And the first guy shakes his head. “You forget that once, there was nothing but dark.”
The thing is, even if the darkness, i.e. meanness or injustice or cruelty seems overwhelming, try and remember that it does not take much light to make a sky full of stars.
The problem is that often the best people, the people who practice goodness regularly and give us the best examples of humanism, would never dream of advertising or bragging about their acts of generosity and love—not because they are inherently modest, even, but because they would never act any differently so can’t conceive of their goodness as deserving of attention.
The world is neither full of good nor full of evil, but both, in immeasurable quantities. If it were only evil, it would not be worth living. If it were only good, it would not be worth living—we would have nothing to give, no choices to make, no chance to be good ourselves.
