Humans are also part of the food web for they get food from plants and other animals. They play an important role in maintaining ecological balance. However, there are human activities that can affect different trophic levels such as over hunting, deforestation, pollution and environment destructions. According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Philippines is one of the most biologically diverse countries in the world. It is also one of the 17 mega-diverse countries with unique species. Despite having variety of species of plants and animals, the country is also home to a large number of threatened animal species. The government have been exerting serious efforts and initiatives to conserve wildlife in the country, and amongst it, most commendable initiative is the Republic Act 9147, also known as "Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act". The act provides protection for endangered, vulnerable and threated species. Below are some of the rare and endangered species in the Philippines that are threatened with extinction. Philippine Tarsier (Tarsius syrichta) Philippine Rafflesia (Rafflesiaceae) Dugong or Sea Cow (Dugong dugon ) Mindoro dwarf buffalo (Bubalus mindorensis) This existing ecological problems whether natural or human made has great impact in the natural balance of the ecosystem. Therefore, each little act to help lessen the problems related to ecological imbalance can make a difference.
