Human activity often changes or destroys the habitats that plants and animals need to survive.Habitat loss is the primary cause of higher extinction rates. Other causes include habitat changes, over-exploitation of wildlife for commercial purposes, the introduction of harmful nonnative species, pollution, and the spread of diseases.

Because human populations are growing so fast animals and plants are disappearing 1000 times faster than they have in the past 65 million years.

The main cause of the extinctions is the destruction of natural habitats by human activities, such as cutting down forests and converting land into fields for farming. Due to human activities, populations of many species have become small and isolated.
