Subject: Increasing cases of domestic violence against women
Sir:
I am writing to you to express my deep concern over increasing number of cases of domestic violence against women. It is so shameful that when our country is marching towards prosperity and advancement, the barbaric acts against women.
According to National Family Health Survey (NHFS-4) released by the Union health ministry every third woman faces domestic violence of various forms in the country. 37 % married women face domestic violence from their husbands; unmarried women are treated violently by mothers or step-mothers (56%), fathers or step-fathers (33%), sisters or brothers (27%), and teachers (15%).
These outrages against women have created a poor image of India among foreign countries. I just wonder where the sentiments of compassion and pity have gone. People should show compassion and pity while dealing with women and children.
I also appeal to the government and the people to come together to fight violence against women. The Government must form special police cells to guard and watch women’s safety in the cities and villages round the clock. The Government must also pass and implement more strict laws than the existing ones for the safety of women. I am hopeful that your esteemed daily will give space to my views.
Thanking you,
Yours truly,
Mira
