Aqua regia is a mixture containing 3 parts conc. hydrochloric acid and 1 part conc. nitric acid.

This mixture, whose name literally means royal water, is able to dissolve noble metals like gold and platinum by reacting with them.

Free chloride radicals are formed in the mixture, which react with gold and silver to form auric chloride and plantinic chloride, which are soluble in water.
