Mendel discovered that the test cross of hybrid plants produces different numbers of progenies, based on the type of heterozygous gametes.

Two progenies of plants can be produced for a monohybrid while four types of progenies can be created from a dihybrid plant. Eight progenies are born from the test cross of trihybrid plants.  

Therefore, now test cross is used in the studies of gene mapping, linkage and other analysis of progenies born from heterogamous plants.
