Important Characteristics of Hybridization? Orbitals belonging to the same atom or ion having similar energies get hybridized. Number of hybrid orbitals is equal to the no. of orbitals taking part in hybridization. Thehybrid orbitals are always equivalent in energy and shape.

HYBRIDISATION

When two or more orbitals having different energy undergo mixing to form orbitals of equivalent energy in identical shape in same number , then this process is called hybridisation and orbitals formed are called hybrid orbitals.

CHARACTERISTICS OF HYBRIDISATION

1) orbitals taking part in hybridisation should have small difference in energy.

2) Hybrid orbitals have equivalent energy and identical; shape.

3)no. of hybrid orbitals is equal to no. of orbitals taking part in hybridisation.

4) half filled, full filled and vacant orbitals can take part in hybridisation.

5)hybrid orbitals have two lobes out of which one lobe is larger than other.

6)by hybridisation, always sigma bond is formed . because these can overlap to a large extent.

hope it'll help you.......!!!
