Leaves and stem also lack cuticle and mechanical tissues. Leaves are 2-3 celled thick. The whole plant is covered by mucilage.
The stem has a wide green aerenchymatous cortex. Xylem is replaced by a central cavity. The color of the plant is dull pale green.
