Hydrochloric acid is secreted by inner lining of stomach.

Explanation:

1. HCl acid is secreted and released by the cells named parietal cells of the stomach.

2. In stomach, proteins needs to be digested and the enzyme which digest proteins is pepsinogen. This enzyme needs acidic medium to work or act upon the food.

3. So, to make the medium acidic in the stomach and to activate the enzyme into pepsin HCl is released in the stomach.

4. Therefore, in the stomach the pH becomes about 1.5

5. This acidic medium also helps in killing and damaging all the harmful microbes and germs that is ingested alongwith the food.

6. HCl also serves as a barrier or a coating and prevents the enzyme pepsin from digesting the stomach lining.
