Hydrogen does not generally exist in the free-state rather it occurs in compounds which means other energy sources have to be used to separate it. Broadly speaking, the compounds are water, natural gas and coal or biomass. Technical difficulties still present hurdles to the everyday use of hydrogen. .

Hydrogen has one electron in its valence shell and it had affinity to accept one electron and gain stable electronic configuration like helium noble gas, hence it is very reactive.
