External division of line segment is similar to the internal division of a line segment. When we divide a line segment externally in a given ratio, then the point which divides the line segment falls outside the line i.e. on the extended part of the line segment.

If AB is the line segment and we divide the line segment AB externally at point C in the ratio a:b, then the ratio of AC:BC = a:b ( same as we used to get the ratio in internal division with only difference is that in external division, point C lies on extended line segment AB, while in internal division point C lies in between line segment AB.
