Concept:

  • Understanding the distance between distance and displacement
  • Identifying the correct directions of motions

Given:

  • The person first faces south (point O) and then turns 90° anticlockwise
  • The person then walks 30 m (point A) and turns north
  • Facing north the person walks 40 m (point B) and turns west
  • Facing west the person walks 60 m (point C) and turns left after which they walk 80 m (point D)

Find:

  • The distance the person is from the starting point, distance OD

Solution:

  • AO distance = 30m
  • AB distance = 40m
  • BC distance = 60m
  • CD distance = 80m
  • Consider point X in the line of A, draw AX perpendicular to CD
  • AX distance = BC = 60m
  • DX distance = DC-AB = 80- 40 = 40m
  • XO distance = AX + AO = 60 + 30 = 90m
  • OD = √(XO²+DX²)
  • OD = √(90²+40²)
  • OD = 98.5m

The person is 98.5m from the starting point.
