Africa a second largest continent. Although it begins less than fifty miles south of Spain, Africa remained the mystery to old word explorers for a hundred of years. The northern part of Africa is the huge bleak desert the Sahara which made overland travel from the Mediterranean cost difficult and dangerous. Added to this, an Arabs  who lived there did not welcome Christian and without their help the journey was just about impossible. It was not until an eighteenth that northern explorers managed to get past the Sahara desert in darkest Africa.
