It cannot be called an "error" since its grammatically correct but someone would surely sound idiotic if they use this sentence in regular conversation

According to the subject verb agreement there is no error in the given sentence.

According to the subject verb agreement if there are two subjects in the given sentence and they joined with as well as, at that time after them we have to use helping verb according to the first subject.

Here in the given sentence the first subject is I and second subject is they so we have to use helping verb after them according to I.

So in this sentence after 'I and they' 'am' helping verb is used  so it is correct according to the rule.

Few more examples -

  1. Ram as well as his parents is going to Delhi.
  2. Teacher as well as students is attending a seminar.
  3. Employer as well as his employees is protesting against new labour laws.
