Assertion- Chalk powder dissolved in water shows Tyndall effect.

Reason- The chalk powder particles suspended in water disperse light.

BOTH ASSERTION AND REASON ARE TRUE.

But why??

  • First of all, when chalk powder is mixed in water, the powder particles are quite large and do not undergo dissolution, hence, they remain suspended and form a SUSPENSION.

  • This suspension of chalk powder in water forms a non-homogenous mixture and the particles keep on dispersing light until they settle down at the bottom.

  • This dispersion is perceived as TYNDALL effect (more commonly seen in colloids), where the path of light can be seen due to dispersion of light by particles comparable to the wavelength of light.
