I bought a pack of 100 rectangular index cards. Each card measured 15 cm by 10cm. The pack said: paper density = 200 GSM (grams per square metre). This means that a square metre of these cards weighs 200 g.

a Each pack of cards is wrapped in a sheet of 50 GSM paper with area 800 cm². I have a number of packs and wish to store them on a shelf which cannot hold more than 10 kg. What is the largest whole number of wrapped packs that can be stored?

b The total weight of 500 identical sheets of paper is 2.4 kg. If each sheet measures 30 cm by 20 cm, what is its paper density in GSM?

c A business card measures 55 mm by 90 mm. Its paper density is 300 GSM. Find its exact weight in grams.

Given data

Dimension of a card

  • Length = 15 cm
  • Width = 10 cm

area = 15 \times 10 = 150cm {}^{2}

Now if 1 card covers area of 150cm {}^{2}

the 100 cards will cover x

cross multiply

x = 150 \times 100 \\ x = 15000cm {}^{2}

Hence , the total area is covered is 15000cm² .
