diaphragm is like a muscular sheet that forms the floor of the chest cavity . During inhalation it moves out and during exhalation it goes back to its original place . therefore it plays a vital role in the mechanism of breathing

the diaphragm moves up and down. while inhaling the diaphragm moves downward allowing the oxygen to be inhaled in. while exhaling the diaphragm moves upward compressing the lungs to push out carbon dioxide.
