Verbs are classified into two types:

1) Transitive

2) Intransitive

  • TRANSITIVE VERBS:

(a) Transitive Verbs are the verbs that have a subject or an object that receives the action. For example, Hari kicked the ball.

→ Here, "ball" is the object of the verb "kicked".

(b) A transitive action verb has a direct object.

  • INTRANSITIVE VERBS:

(a) Intransitive Verbs are the verbs that have a subject or denote an action which doesn't pass the object.

(b) They don't require an object to complete its meaning. For example, The baby was crying.

  • The verb in the given sentence is Intransitive.
  • Because, the verb 'go' doesn't have a direct object receiving the action in the sentence and it do not need any object to make sense.

First let us know more about Transitive and Intransitive Verb.

Transitive Verb:-

A transitive verb is one that is used with an object: a noun, phrase, or pronoun that refers to the person or thing that is affected by the action of the verb.

Example:-

I brought a car

brought- Transitive verb.

a car- Direct object

You buy something (an object).

What did you buy? A car

You cannot just say 'I brought'

(incomplete and incorrect)

You need a direct object after a transitive verb. ( in this case 'buy'.)

Intransitive Verb:-

An intransitive verb is defined as a verb that does not take a direct object. That means there's no word in the sentence that tells who or what received the action of the verb.

Example:-

The baby smiled.

Intransitive verb

You cannot have an object after an intransitive verb. ( in this case 'smile')

You cannot 'smile something'

Another example:-

We waited but nobody came.

Waited, came- Intransitive verb

Verb that are Transitive and Intransitive

Some verbs can be transitive in one sentence and intransitive in another.

1. I stopped the car.

stopped- Transitive verb.

The car- Direct object.

2.The car stopped.

Stopped- Intransitive verb.

There is no object.

Sometimes the meaning of the verb changes depending on whether that verb is transitive or intransitive( especially with phrasal verbs).

Example:-

He runs a small grocery store.

(Transitive: run= manage)

He runs along the beach every morning.

( Intransitive: run = the sport)

I go to school everyday.

go - Intransitive verb

It's intransitive as it does contain any object.
