I had always wanted to visit the Angkor Wat temple complex, but I was a little apprehensive before I landed, somewhat expecting a country starving, and soldiers on the streets. However, I was very pleasantly surprised. Yes, there is a lot of poverty (and a fair share of scam artists), but on the whole, I found the place vibrant and progressive, and the people incredibly friendly.
The temples have to be seen to be believed - none of the photographs you have ever seen can convey the awe and mystery of the place; the atmosphere is mesmerising.
Siem Reap town has a relaxed village atmosphere, and is very easy to get around, so you can take full advantage of the many lively bars and restaurants. Most people will make a bee-line for the (now famous) Pub Street, but there are lots of other great little places to try out. I stayed in a lovely guesthouse called Eden, which is in The Alley, a sweet little street right in the heart of town., full of bars, restaurants and lots of places to shop!!!
I would heartily recommend SIem Reap to anybody who enjoys experiencing history and culture and/or having a good time.
